Google and MORE Changes – Featured Snippet URL

On January 22nd, Google announced that it will no longer automatically present the URLs within Featured Snippets among the page one organic results. URLs used within a Featured Snippet subsequently ranked organically on page one of the SERP. Now, and as a rule, such URLs will no longer rank on page one of the Google SERP.

Zero-Position

Currently, the industry-standard does not consider a Featured Snippet URL as part of the organic rankings. To this, Featured Snippets are often referred to as the ‘Zero Position Box’.   Your organic ranking is determined by the URL’s position among the organic results shown on page one of the SERP.

What You May See

You may see drops or  rank losses. This is because Google is taking the organic URLs that also appear inside a Featured Snippet and placing that URL on page two of the SERP.

SEO Crossroads

This change puts the industry at a crossroads. How should these URLs be ranked and should we change our strategy or just wait it out. ach out to us at service@rankranger.com.

Originally spotted by Mark Barrera, who shared his findings on Twitter, the news broke that sites ranking for featured snippets will no longer appear in the first page of organic SERPs. This was confirmed on January 22, 2020.

A Featured Snippet is an Answer Box

Sometimes referred to as an answer box, a featured snippet is a rich result generated by Google designed to answer the user’s query in a concise manner in the form of paragraphs, bullet items, images, etc.

Of course, it’s not all black and white and clicks come down to more than just the presence of a featured snippet, but from the evidence, it’s looking like ranking in position one will benefit you more than ranking in position zero.

It’s not all black and white and clicks come down to more than just the presence of a featured snippet, but from the evidence, it’s looking like ranking in position one will benefit you more than ranking in position zero.

What does the update mean for local search?

Featured snippet local business

While local businesses can compete for featured snippets they’ are generally less likely to rank for them but possible.

But it’s not so likely you’ll gain clicks or business through this method, given that the searcher could be sourcing this information from out of the area, that is where Google My Business Knowledge panel will always help you in your local search.

Summary

This update to SERPs will likely have little effect for local businesses, unless your Marketing Consultant or Agency is working really hard on ranking for a Featured Snippet. Also for local pack rankings  – no effect!

Facebook Removes Grey Badges October 29th

Facebook introduced gray verification badges in 2015 to show which Pages for businesses and organizations are authentic.
However, they found that they can be more confusing than helpful, so they’re removing them on October 29.  This won’t impact the way the Page appears in search results.

How to verify authentic pages:

Best Practices to Improve Page Visibility and Follower Engagement

It’s important for people to find and follow your Page. Businesses that follow these best practices have a better chance of being found by new and existing customers. Your content also needs to keep people engaged and interested enough to follow your Page. Here are the top best practices to help your Page gain a following on Facebook, such as how to optimize for search and what content people want to see. Your Page’s search visibility may improve in the search bar, the Events and Places bookmark or when people tag your Page in a post. These tips will also help your business appear when someone tries to tag your Page location (such as a Check-in).

  • Select the categories that best describe your business. Categories help people find your business when they search for your services or products. You can select up to three categories in your Page Settings. Select the most specific category for your business to maximize visibility in searches and make your Page easier to find. Learn more about how to choose a category on your Page.
  • If you own a business with a physical location, add your address. People frequently search for nearby businesses. Make sure your address is updated and accurate so people can easily find your business. Ensure your map pin is updated with the correct location.

    • If you don’t have a location where people can visit your business, edit your Page info to hide your street address on computer and mobile devices.
    • If you have multiple locations, create store Pages so people can find them on a map or when they search for your business in a specific location. Learn more about multiple locations
    • If your storefront is located in another structure (such as a mall or a train station), select the option Located inside another place and add details so people know where to find you.
  • Add a profile picture and cover photo to your Page. People tend to see businesses with a cover photo and profile picture as more trustworthy.

    • Profile photo: Use a simple visual representation of your business, such as a logo. Use a square image.
    • Cover photo or video: Show a recognizable part of your business that will attract people. Use a cover video instead of a photo to help keep visitors on your Page and increase engagement.
  • If you have a website, add it to your Facebook Page. Make it easy for potential customers to learn more about your business.
  • Update your hours. Customers want to know when your business will be open, particularly during holidays and special events. Update your business hours so search results show your location is open. If your hours aren’t updated, your business may appear as closed and discourage people from visiting. Learn how to add hours of business to your Page.
  • Turn on Recommendations: Let customers submit a rating and review/recommendation for your Page. Visitors to your Page will find valuable information that will increase their trust in your business. Recommendations also allow your Page to appear in searches for specific terms such as menu items. Learn how to turn on Recommendations.
  • Encourage people to follow your Page: Remind new and existing customers of the value of why they should follow your Page, such as regular updates, new products or services, easy communication and exclusive offers. People that follow or like your Page are more likely to see your content in their News Feed, which helps your business stay at the top of their minds. See ideas for posts on your Page.

Brand Memory Magic

Personal Branding Experience

I noticed a post the other day from my friend, Melissa that said “Personal Branding Experience.”

It definitely caught my eye since I live in the world of Internet Marketing where success relies heavily on Brand. We had to meet.

I am convinced that what Melissa offers is a stumbling block for many, and so we talked about how we could make the ‘Personal Branding Experience’ even more complete for our peeps right here in our wonderful community of #eldoradocounty.

Fine-Tune Your Brand and Sharpen Your Message Workshop

For me, this was a no brainer – I’m working on a workshop right now with Placerville Downtown Association to help the merchants fine-tune their brand in actionable ways, i.e., by doing. It will be a fun and insightful workshop! (sidenote – I already gave the first workshop and Wow what a great experience full of valuable information!!!)

Well, at this point, if you don’t know Melissa, I bet you are like, are you going to tell me what she offers?

YES. An Experience.  Perfectly great. Now what.

What Are You Selling?

You see, it doesn’t matter what she is selling, because she is selling her brand. The only thing that matters is what feeling did I get from her brand, before during, and after?

Before: Encouragement, excitement, inclusive, Generosity

During: Safety, Hugs, Warmth, Family, We’ve Got You, I’ve got it taken care of, red carpet

After: Praise, more Excitement, more Encouragement, Gratitude

AND

First Two Points to Branding

#1. & #2 – The First 2 points to Branding: That is who she says her business is and That is also who everyone else says it is.

Brand Memory Magic

When ‘What you say about your brand’ and ‘What others say about your brand’ and ‘What you present to others about your brand’ all say the same thing and evoke the same feeling, that’s when the magic happens called Brand Memory.

Stumbling Block – How Do You Introduce Yourself or Co-Promote Other Businesses

If you don’t know who you are, how do you introduce yourself and invoke the ‘feeling’ that you were hoping for? Are you going to represent yourself as a Hero brand like Nike – Achieve Greatness! when you are actually a Creator/Artist brand like Crayola that wants to recreate and beautify the world everywhere?

Experience – Gut Feeling

What Melissa offers is an experience and a feeling. What she sells is photography. Because her brand is solid, she could actually sell other things under her brand – which is by the way the Caregiver brand.

Melissa understands people and makes them feel comfortable. She creates this environment and helps them portray their Brand. I went in full well knowing that I am representing Wellman Works, Ltd., a leader, teacher, coach of all things Internet. My business is a Sage Brand.

So naturally, Melissa staged me in working type modes and then as we progressed, she started really ramping it up to Classic and Glamorous.

Branding, where does it start and end? It starts with a feeling, an experience that you want for your clients. In Melissa’s case with Vintage Photography, it is a ‘giant hug that you dissolve in.’

It’s a bit like reverse engineering from a feeling that you want to invoke. From there we can identify the archetype i.e., character of your brand and keep your business on track.

Can a Small Town Go Viral?

Check out this performance with an explainer video from Locable about Placerville! Super excited to be working with Placerville Downtown Assocation and Locable.

When a Simple Main Street Community Explainer Video Goes Viral on Facebook (with pictures)

in Placerville

Placerville, CA is one of the first community’s to embrace Locable’s Community-Wide Initiative and Local Connections technology.

Placerville is also known as “Old Hangtown”.

There is a lot of misinformation about the nature of the moniker and so we decided to create a brief explainer video as part of the work with do with them to promote the Downtown Association.

The video was posted to the Placerville Downtown Association Facebook page at 9:14AM on March 7th and immediately began gaining speed (the page had just over 5400 ‘likes’ at the time).

One of the nice things about a post like this is that it gets shared – a lot!

In this case, it was shared by individuals, businesses and into specific groups – such as “You Know You Grew Up in Placerville If” – we shared it to the group as did others… no need to wait to get things started 😉

While many of those shares result in people ‘liking’ the share, only the ‘likes’ or reactions on the post itself can be invited to become fans/followers of the page. Even still, you can see from the graph above that inviting people who liked this post to like the page resulted in a significant uptick of page fans.

As you can see above, within a day the video had reached nearly 30,000 people and had nearly 5,000 engagements on 15k views.

An interesting thing to note, is the difference in engagement between those who saw it via auto-play and those who clicked to play.

No surprise, those who clicked were far more engaged throughout – given the defaults, the vast majority of people fall into the auto-play bucket. Nevertheless, the video garnered significant engagement of all types and had solid viewing which explains why it reached so many people.

As we write this less than 2-weeks after initially posting the video, the statistics are quite fascinating.

Total people reached: 60,333 (nearly 31k unique viewers)

Total Engagements: 9,998

61% of Viewers were Women, 70% of viewers we in California

Over 20k minutes of video watched – that’s over 2-full weeks of video watched!

History, local insights and knowledge, and the unique if not mundane things that make “here” special are truly engaging when delivered in an effective medium.

What can you share about your community to remind people of where they came from or why they’re “here”?

Locable is proud to support communities nationwide by partnering with Main Streets, Downtowns, Chambers, and Towns – not to mention local businesses and nonprofits.

If you’d like a hand growing your reach and impact or automating cross-promotion and collaboration, we’d love to hear from you.

Fixing a WordPress Problem – Downloading a File Instead of Executing

Good afternoon.

HOW TO WIN WITH UPDRAFTPLUS, AN EDITOR, AND AS MANY BACKUPS AS YOU CAN GATHER

Today I played Spades. Spades you say, I love that card game.

Yeah, well most of the day it was an uphill battle, but indeed I won.

Executing WordPress and Getting a Downloaded Empty File?

What you say, I’ll play my Ace. Well, that was a little premature, but I did find a fix although that wasn’t the first or last fix of the day.

Edit your .htaccess file and add these two lines:

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .html

AddHandler php-script .php .html

or

AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .php

or

Completely obliterate all the excess stuff and do this:

# BEGIN WordPress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ – [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>

# END WordPress

Have a happy DAY!

What really saved my bacon and let me match my bid, get the website back up and WIN?

UpdraftPlus – Even though GoDaddy discourages it and I went it alone with FTP, I bit the bullet and restored an earlier backup that wasn’t showing well with just the raw file upload.

and

I learned a lot – I use Divi for WordPress and I will now not only export and save my page and individual section and module layouts – I will export them. The only thing that didn’t work was exporting the Divi Customizer – I will work on that. I will download the completed files to my local desktop/i.e., external drive, AND I will take a right click SAVE of each html web page always!
