Google and MORE Changes – Featured Snippet URL

On January 22nd, Google announced that it will no longer automatically present the URLs within Featured Snippets among the page one organic results. URLs used within a Featured Snippet subsequently ranked organically on page one of the SERP. Now, and as a rule, such URLs will no longer rank on page one of the Google SERP.

Zero-Position

Currently, the industry-standard does not consider a Featured Snippet URL as part of the organic rankings. To this, Featured Snippets are often referred to as the ‘Zero Position Box’.   Your organic ranking is determined by the URL’s position among the organic results shown on page one of the SERP.

What You May See

You may see drops or  rank losses. This is because Google is taking the organic URLs that also appear inside a Featured Snippet and placing that URL on page two of the SERP.

Originally spotted by Mark Barrera, who shared his findings on Twitter, the news broke that sites ranking for featured snippets will no longer appear in the first page of organic SERPs. This was confirmed on January 22, 2020.

A Featured Snippet is an Answer Box

Sometimes referred to as an answer box, a featured snippet is a rich result generated by Google designed to answer the user’s query in a concise manner in the form of paragraphs, bullet items, images, etc.

Of course, it’s not all black and white and clicks come down to more than just the presence of a featured snippet, but from the evidence, it’s looking like ranking in position one will benefit you more than ranking in position zero.

What does the update mean for local search?

While local businesses can compete for featured snippets they’ are generally less likely to rank for them but possible.

But it’s not so likely you’ll gain clicks or business through this method, given that the searcher could be sourcing this information from out of the area, that is where Google My Business Knowledge panel will always help you in your local search.

Summary

This update to SERPs will likely have little effect for local businesses, unless your Marketing Consultant or Agency is working really hard on ranking for a Featured Snippet. Also for local pack rankings  – no effect!

Go to Chrome and type in your business name and location or business name and city and state.

You should see something like this:  you can add your hours, address, website, appointment link – which I just updated, thank you very much. Check out your information and make sure it is correct because Google compares all your information on the Internet and if it isn’t the same – you are no longer BFF’s.

It definitely caught my eye since I live in the world of Internet Marketing where success relies heavily on Brand. We had to meet.

It’s a bit like reverse engineering from a feeling that you want to invoke. From there we can identify the archetype i.e., character of your brand and keep your business on track.

Can a Small Town Go Viral?

When a Simple Main Street Community Explainer Video Goes Viral on Facebook (with pictures)

Placerville, CA is one of the first community’s to embrace Locable’s Community-Wide Initiative and Local Connections technology.

Placerville is also known as “Old Hangtown”.

There is a lot of misinformation about the nature of the moniker and so we decided to create a brief explainer video as part of the work with do with them to promote the Downtown Association.

The video was posted to the Placerville Downtown Association Facebook page at 9:14AM on March 7th and immediately began gaining speed (the page had just over 5400 ‘likes’ at the time).

One of the nice things about a post like this is that it gets shared – a lot!

In this case, it was shared by individuals, businesses and into specific groups – such as “You Know You Grew Up in Placerville If” – we shared it to the group as did others… no need to wait to get things started 😉

While many of those shares result in people ‘liking’ the share, only the ‘likes’ or reactions on the post itself can be invited to become fans/followers of the page. Even still, you can see from the graph above that inviting people who liked this post to like the page resulted in a significant uptick of page fans.

As you can see above, within a day the video had reached nearly 30,000 people and had nearly 5,000 engagements on 15k views.

An interesting thing to note, is the difference in engagement between those who saw it via auto-play and those who clicked to play.

No surprise, those who clicked were far more engaged throughout – given the defaults, the vast majority of people fall into the auto-play bucket. Nevertheless, the video garnered significant engagement of all types and had solid viewing which explains why it reached so many people.

As we write this less than 2-weeks after initially posting the video, the statistics are quite fascinating.

Total people reached: 60,333 (nearly 31k unique viewers)

Total Engagements: 9,998

Comments: 480

61% of Viewers were Women, 70% of viewers we in California

Over 20k minutes of video watched – that’s over 2-full weeks of video watched!

History, local insights and knowledge, and the unique if not mundane things that make “here” special are truly engaging when delivered in an effective medium.

What can you share about your community to remind people of where they came from or why they’re “here”?

Only 5% of businesses have a Google average star rating below 3 stars, while 61% have 4-5 stars.

Fixing a WordPress Problem – Downloading a File Instead of Executing

What really saved my bacon and let me match my bid, get the website back up and WIN?

UpdraftPlus – Even though GoDaddy discourages it and I went it alone with FTP, I bit the bullet and restored an earlier backup that wasn’t showing well with just the raw file upload.

and

I learned a lot – I use Divi for WordPress and I will now not only export and save my page and individual section and module layouts – I will export them. The only thing that didn’t work was exporting the Divi Customizer – I will work on that. I will download the completed files to my local desktop/i.e., external drive, AND I will take a right click SAVE of each html web page always!

Have You Hacked Your Own Password?

How many times today did you try and log into some sites today after trying a password three, four, five, or more times? And this password is a similar combination of the first one – maybe using a capital letter or some other variation of all the other passwords that you use. Stop the madness and find the solution here.

This is a recipe for disaster. First of all, if you can ‘hack’ in with variations of your password, so can someone else. Especially if they happen upon your list or your Excel spreadsheet.

Tagging on Facebook Made Easy

I’ll be the first one to admit it – Facebook can be finicky when tagging, but perserverance will prevail.

Tagging is the BEST Way to Increase Your Reach For tag-youre-itYour Photo, Post, or Comment

 

Tagging in a Post/Status Update

To tag someone in your post, start typing their name and then select their profile from the dropdown menu that appears (make sure to capitalize the first letter of their name). To tag a Page, type the “@” symbol and then start typing the Page’s name.

(Using the @ symbol for either a page or a profile is more consistent)

Tagging Yourself or Your Friends in a Photo:

  1. Click the photo to expand it
  2. Hover over the photo and click Tag Photoat the bottom
  3. Click the person in the photo and start typing their name
  4. Choose the full name of the person you want to tag when it appears
  5. Click Done Tagging

 

If you want to tag friends in multiple photos in an album at once:

  1. Go to the album
  2. Click Tagat the top right of the page
  3. Enter the name of a friend or page to tag
  4. Click each photo you want to tag with that name
  5. Click Save Tagswhen you’re finished
  6. Repeat this process for each friend or page you’d like to tag

Keep in mind that when you tag someone in a photo, that person’s friends may also see, like or comment on the photo. Also, if you tag a photo that was not uploaded by a friend, the person who uploaded the photo will need to approve the tag.

Add tags to anything you post, including photos and updates. Tags can point to your friends or anyone else on Facebook. Adding a tag creates a link that people can follow to learn more. Adding tags can let people know when they’re in photos or other things you share. People you tag can receive a notification so they can see your post. The post may also go on the person’s profile and appear in their friends’ news feeds.
